I would like to share my last moments that I had with Mel. On Xmas day I drove from Cold Lake to Wainwright with present in hand to visit him in the hospital. As I approached his hospital bed I knew it was time to say my goodbyes, it took everything I had to lean down and press my cheek to his and say I love you, I felt it took all his strength to press his cheek to mine and say his last words to me which were I love you too. As I left his room a nurse approached me and said that he keeps asking for Marlene, at that very moment I knew he was ready to be reunited with the love of his life my mother who passed away years ago.Even though we will all miss him he is were he wants to be.My fondest memory will be I was his baby girl.

In 1984 when I was first introduced to Mel, he stood up from a table, reached out, shook my hand, looked over at Marlene and smiled. He bought all the rounds that night, talked up a storm, played pool most all of the night, he even lost one or two (on purpose I'm sure). I guess one could say we hit it off.
Mel and I shared time together hunting, fishing, ski-doo-ing, playing cards, shooting pool, and drinking a cold one or two, regardless of the activity it was always a lot of fun and sometimes very memorable, usually when there was more than one or two cold ones.
I am truly blessed to have known Mel, and very thankful for his kindness and generosity.
Mel & Marlene forever in my heart and forever missed.
Love, Danny

I was thinking of this memory last night and thought I would share. Anyone that knew Mel knew that he was a tough stubborn man. But this memory shows another side of him. I was in the park hotel playing pool with friends when I was about 19. Mel came in for a couple beer and sat down with us. He put his quarter on the pool table to be the next challenger and that ended up being me. Of course he wanted to play for money so the bet started off at one dollar, and I won! So the second game my friend wanted to bet on me and he said sure. I kept losing and she kept betting on me until she lost all her money to Mel. She was a single mother with three kids and she just lost her entire welfare cheque to Mel. I was very upset that he took her money! A week later he saw my friend and gave her the money back! He was just trying to teach her a lesson! He could be so kind and gentle when he wanted too! I will miss u every day Mel!
With love, Diane

Here is one of my funniest memories of my Great Uncle Melvin. When I was quite young I had a Shetland Pony named Snowball that I kept out at my Grandpa’s farm. Snowball was a very stubborn pony and I usually ended up crying out of frustration when trying to ride him. Well, Uncle Melvin decided that he was going to teach my pony a lesson one day and show him who was boss. Uncle Mel got on my pony (remember how big Uncle Mel was in her earlier years) and Snowball proceeded to buck and buck some more until he had completely bucked Uncle Mel off. Guess Uncle Melvin was taught the lesson NOT Snowball and we all had a good laugh! Uncle Melvin was a large man with a large personality. I am so glad I was able to see him when he was still full of mischief and full of life at the lodge in Wainwright before he ended up in the hospital. RIP - Love your great niece Lea-ann Gerling (Barber)
