Obituary of Betty Roadhouse
Elizabeth June Coleman “Betty” was born July 12, 1941 in Hardisty, Alberta. Betty was raised on the Coleman homestead east of Hughenden with her dad George, mom Evelyn, sister Kathleen and brothers Don and Rick. Betty shared so many fond memories of growing up with her cousins Margaret, Marianne and Joyce Coleman who lived on the Coleman farm as well. Betty attended Hughenden School. Betty met and fell in love with Wesley Roadhouse “Skip”, an Evesham SK boy, while he was working for Richardson Farms. Betty and Skip’s courtship lasted 3 years, they were married July 18, 1958 in Hughenden. They resided in Wainwright, Skip working at the oil refinery and Betty in the kitchen at CFB Wainwright and the Wainwright General Hospital. Their union produced four children; Dale, Tammy, Mary and Wesley George. They settled down on the Coleman homestead to raise their family, Skip farming and Betty worked various jobs in town and raising the children. Betty loved to cook, growing a large bountiful garden, raising chickens, geese, ducks, pigs and several other animals. Sharing these bounties with friends & family. She was famous for her buns, cinnamon buns, cream puffs and every meal she made was delicious. So famous in fact when she rang the dinner bell at the lake everyone came for supper. The farm was often the scene of impromptu guests hoping to sample Betty’s delicious breakfasts! In 1977 the Roadhouses moved to town to be closer to the arena. They enjoyed 6 years caretaking the arena. Mom also enjoyed working part time at Thorsten’s Hardware Store. Throughout the years, their door was always open for a visit, coffee and laughter, many stories were swapped over their kitchen table! Betty loved playing Nintendo for hours after retirement and she completed all the levels and often hogging the controls from the kids. Betty loved crocheting making many beautiful afghans and she loved doing ceramics. Many happy summers were spent at Shorncliffe Lake, at their cabin. Campfires, friends and watermelon parties! Betty loved cheering on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their many activities. In 1988 Betty was involved in a traffic collision, and this marked the start of the decline of her health. Betty battled diabetes; arthritis; cancer; heart disease, 5 hip surgeries and general health decline throughout the years. Her and Skip moved into Belkirk Villa in 2007 when the upkeep of their house became too much for them to handle. After breaking a hip, Betty moved into Hardisty Long Term Care residing there until she moved to Wainwright Long Term Care in 2012. Betty lived there until she passed away May 19, 2016. Betty is predeceased by her loving husband Skip, her parents George and Evelyn and her infant sister Mary. Betty is survived by her son Dale (Debbie) Roadhouse; daughter Tammy (Neal) Brown; daughter Mary (Mike) Mueller and son Wesley George (Jennifer). Several grandchildren: Melissa (Sheldon) Currier; Amie Roadhouse; Jesse Brown; Cole Brown; Clinton Mueller; Blair (Haylie) Mueller; Alden Mueller; Nicholas Hoff; Emma Hoff. Great grand children Gracie Currier; Jakob Currier & Kylie Currier. Sister Kathleen (David), Brothers Don (Norma) Coleman & Rick (Joyce) Coleman, as well as many nieces and nephews. In her later years Betty derived great pleasure from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lighting up when they came into the room. She enjoyed playing Bingo and listening to musical guests at Long Term Care. Betty’s family would like to thank the staffs at both Hardisty and Wainwright Long Term Cares, as well as the Recreation Departments. Their patience and loving care did not go unnoticed and is truly appreciated by her family. Keeping with Betty's wishes a private family interment will take place at the Lakeview Cemetery.
