Obituary of Joyce Lillian Myer

Joyce was born on March 10,1935 at the Wainwright General Hospital to Fred and Jennie Adams. Joyce passed away on April 22, 2020 at the Wainwright Long Term Care at the age of 85. Joyce started her childhood life on a farm in the Gilt-Edge district, north-east of Wainwright, the Adams family moved to Edmonton, White Court and back to Wainwright as work allowed. As a young girl growing up, Joyce loved riding horses, and just being outside with her dad. Dogs were always a big part of Joyce’s life, there were always one or two dogs around. Joyce would sooner do outside or barn chores then inside housework. She was often found hidden away someplace reading a book, which often got her into trouble because her chores were not always done. She loved to read. Joyce attend the Plaxtonville country school and completed grade nine. After completing her schooling, Joyce started her working career, caring for children and performing household duties for some of the neighbors and relatives. At the age of 18, Joyce went to work for McLeod’s Funeral Home taking care of children and household duties. In 1953 at the age of 18, Joyce was married to Ernie Myer and they had three children, a son Keray in 1955, a son Kelly in 1957, and a daughter Tara in 1960. As well as raising three children, Joyce worked at Jack Morgan’s Department Store and later at Joe’s Place for Joe Keller and then worked for her son Keray after he bought the store from Joe. And if you were to ask Keray he would say “I might own the store, but I worked for Joyce”. The store became a place where there were daily visitors that stopped for a coffee and visit with Joyce. Joyce and Ernie lived in several places, in the town of Wainwright and in the MD of Wainwright. If you were to ask Joyce, she would say the farm in the Gilt-Edge district and on an acreage in the Auburn Dale district were the best years of her life. This is where she would spend endless hours in her flower beds and garden. She will be remembered for her love of lilies. This is where her greatest memories were made with friends and family. Joyce enjoyed painting, and many of Joyce’s artwork can be found hanging at the Battle River Lodge, Long Term Care and in many homes of friends and family. Her biggest undertaking would be when she painted a mural on the wall of the family cabin at Clear Lake which is still there today. Another one of Joyce’s greatest loves was cooking and having friends and families over for a meal. Joyce loved reading cookbooks from cover to cover and she was even known to give a few hints to the cooks at the Lodge on how to improve on their homemade soups. Joyce liked to dabble in Astrology and hand palm reading. Found memories will be remember between Grandma Joyce and her grandchildren. This is where Grandma Joyce would check the astrology book (known as the love bible) to ensure all her grandchildren were choosing a compatible mate. And then she might add in a little of her own advice too. Joyce was at her happiest when the grandchildren stop in for a visit and always had a homemade soup and buns to send home with them. Each grandchild will have a Grandma Joyce story to tell. Joyce and Ernie were always at the Gilt-Edge Hall dances, they would only sit out a few dances just to catch their breath and then continue dancing late into the night. Joyce enjoyed playing cards with neighbors and later enjoyed playing poker with family. You would always hear a comment from Joyce if you raised her bet. Her grandson; Keray got his poker nick name “Big City” from Joyce. She accused him of coming from the big city to win and take her money. But Joyce knew how to play poker and often was the one that would take your money. Joyce lived life to the fullest and usually spoke what was on her mind. Joyce will be missed by her family and friends. Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Ernie of Wainwright; two children, Keray Myer and Tara (Casey) Hopaluk all of Wainwright; grandchildren, Beau (Jori) Myer, Sarah (Kurtis) Keller, Crystal Urquhart, Kala Myer, Keray (Krystal) Hopaluk, Paul (Laurie) Hopaluk, Jenna (Jon) Doll; great grandchildren, Bryn Quintal, Andi Quintal, Lincoln Myer, Brey Keller, Bowen Keller, Jett Keller, Vyda Keller, Diesel Myer, Isla Hopaluk, Carter Hopaluk, Lydi Hopaluk, Rhett Hopaluk, Veda Doll, Ramsey Doll; one brother, Clinton (Lorna) Adams of Camrose, Alberta. She was predeceased by her son, Kelly; parents, Fred and Jennie Adams; brother, Floyd Adams; sister, Marlene McMann; brother-in-law, Ron McMann. Due to the current circumstances a private family interment for Joyce will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at 11:00 AM. The family is intending to have a social gathering in memory of Joyce when it is safe to do so. If so desired the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Wainwright Health Foundation CT Scanner project.
