I babysat for Butch and Marian starting when Tracey was just a baby and very quickly learned that Butch was quite the joker. When Marian was pregnant with Doug, Butch bet me on what day the baby would be born. What he didn't tell me was that Doug was to be born by a scheduled C Section....and he knew the date. So, he won the bet and even took my money! LOL! He was a warm and wonderful man who enhanced the lives of all he touched. Thank you, Butch, for so many amazing memories.

I met Butch only once and for a very short time. I was employed by Alberta Infrastructure and I had received a call from my supervisor with a request to pick up Minister Fischer and his assistant at the Bonnyville airport and give them a ride back to town. It was November and it was a very blustery day. The wind was howling across the tarmac and it was bitterly cold. We met on the tarmac and were headed back to the vehicle when Butch stopped and said "wait, I'd better go ask the pilot if he needs a ride into town". His assistant said, he can find his own way. Butch said no, and he walked back across the tarmac and asked the pilot if he needed a ride. The pilot thanked him and said that he had a vehicle there and he still had to tarp up the plane. I never met Butch again but I will always remember his act of kindness.

My most sincere condolences to Marian and all the family. I was so saddened to hear of "uncle" Butch's passing. I have such lovely childhood memories of our (too few) visits to the farm and Butch's great sense of fun, and of course I will always remember those smiling, twinkly eyes! I know how much he will be missed by all the family. I am so glad Mom & Betty made it out last Autumn to see Butch and quite a few of you I believe.\nIt's been so many years since I've seen any of you! I hope you are all coping well in these unprecedented times. \nWith love and sincerest sympathy\n from Joey and the Weir family xx

Dear Mrs. Fischer and your family,
Sincerest condolences to all of you. To me and my family, Butch was such a generous, genuine and golden soul. My Mom's (Diane Todoruk) long career along side Butch quickly effected our family to say the least. The infectious energy and positive nature of Butch's work environment at the Leg carried home for us at the end of Mom's work day. The stories were always exciting and often with hilarious anecdotes. We loved to hear about the new developments in your family and appreciated your generosity throughout the years. I will always remember Butch's smile, and how important he made family (even his work family).
My heartfelt prayers to all of you and I know that Butch has left you with a legacy of love. We will all miss him dearly, but I know that heaven just became a lot more fun with him! May his memory be eternal.
Thank you for allowing us to be at the memorial today (virtually)....it really meant the world to our family.
Hugs,
Kathleen Todoruk

Thinking of you all on the loss of husband, father and grandfather. I have many fond memories of Butch, one of my rural MLAs, when I worked at the Legislature way back in the mid-1980s. No translation needed when talking rural and ag issues. Then came the years of meeting at the ball diamond and hockey rink. May your memories dull the ache of loss.

Butch...I remember you standing up for the young girl from Ontario who was to be the new UC minister...Many believed I would be gone by Christmas...So you set up bets with all those who thought I would not survive! The prize was a bottle of rum...I survived until Christmas and beyond and you had many bottles of rum delivered to you! I remember you asking me if I had my winter kit in my car...and I said what is a winter kit...he lecture me on the roads...in the winter and if I went into a ditch I needed to have a survival kit...! You helped and encouraged so much...chaired the board...had lots of coffee at my kitchen table...always encouraging me and my ideas...I know you were proud of me because you told me many times...! You are one of the best! I know your family and community will be grieving for you as I am too...hugs to you Marion and all of your wonderful family!

Butch was a breath of fresh, joyful air in the midst of some of the dullest sessions in the Legislature and caucus! He and others like Tom Musgrove and Jack Campbell didn't suffer fools gladly whether on the government or opposition benches. He had many talents - but the greatest two were his smile and the twinkle in his eyes.... A good friend an colleague - and now for the seal of approval...my wife Jean thought he was one of the best MLA's.... He and others with their sense of humor - would wink at me in The Chair...during boring night sessions...and give me a giggle...RIP...you were one of the good guys! Blessings to your families - David and Jean I will lower to half staff the Canadian and Albertan flags here at St Margaret`s Eagle Butte in the Cypress Hills - after I read the Burial Service for him
